Judge Edward Sweeney
Biography: Born
September 11, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri. Educated at St. Margaret of
Scotland parochial school and Mullanphy and Wade public elementary
schools in the City of St. Louis,
and St. Louis University High School; Bachelor's degree in political
science with honors and Distinguished Military Graduate from the
University of Missouri-Columbia;
Master's degree in Business Administration from Saint Louis University;
Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of
Law. Studied international law at
the University of Notre Dame's program in London, England. Certificate
in General Jurisdiction Judicial Studies from the National Judicial
College. Graduate of the Field
Artillery Officers' Course, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Served two years
active duty in the United States Army, including one year as a field
artillery officer in the 101st
Airborne Division, Republic of Vietnam. Awarded Bronze Star and Vietnam
campaign and service ribbons. Elected to the Missouri House of
Representatives, 1974, 1976, and
1978. Elected as House Majority Whip, 1976. Chair of the House
Committee on Civil and Criminal Justice; Vice-Chair of the House
Committee on the Judiciary. Appointed
as a member of the City of Saint Louis Board of Heritage and Urban
Design. Elected as Democratic Committeeman for the 8th Ward, 1984,
1988, 1992, and 1996. Elected
Chair of the Third Congressional District Democratic Committee, 1986,
1988, 1990. Elected as a delegate to the Democratic National
Convention, 1988. Private law practitioner,
1974 - 1986. Served as an Assistant Circuit Attorney, 1986 -1997.
Appointed Associate Circuit Judge by the late Governor Mel Carnahan,
1997. Retained in office at the
general election in 2000 and in 2004. Appointed Circuit Judge by
Governor Bob Holden on January 6, 2005. Member of the Missouri Bar
Association, the Bar Association
of Metropolitan St. Louis, and the Missouri Association of Probate and
Associate Circuit Judges. Elected by the Missouri Associate Circuit
Judges' Section of the Judicial
Conference to serve on the Missouri Judicial Resources Commission.
Served two-year term as Chair of the Associate Circuit Judges of the
22nd Judicial Circuit. Member of
the Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the 101st Airborne Division
Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and
Saint Joan of Arc parish. Married with two children and two step-children.
