Mental Health Court

On April 22, 2003, Boone County established a Mental Health Court, which is a treatment court program that uses a team approach to provide mental health and other services to the mentally ill who have been arrested for non-violent offenses in Boone County. A team of court and mental health workers designs a program for each defendant to address their mental health needs, and to provide them the essential skills for functioning in society without further intervention from the criminal justice system. The progress of each individual in his or her treatment plan is closely monitored by the team, with adjustments in the plan being made as necessary, and sanctions issued for non-compliance. Defendants must be involved in the program for a minimum of one year, and the period of participation can be extended to two years.
