Supreme Court of Missouri Committee on Civic Education
Using judges to connect Missourians with their courts – where the most important issues in their lives are heard and decided every day.
Courts truly are at the crossroads in every Missouri community. Historically, a courthouse anchors most town squares. But Missouri courts continue to matter in our lives today.
Because of Courts,
We do not have to resort to violence to resolve our disputes.
We are protected from the government storming into our homes whenever it wants, taking whatever it wants.
We get to decide if, when and where to attend religious services.
Our children are not deprived of educational opportunities because of their gender or the color of their skin.
We can enjoy our most fundamental freedoms as human beings.
People are involved in more than 1 million cases each year – just in the Missouri courts. But many people lack an understanding about the courts. More people have an understanding of the Kardashians or Duck Dynasty than they have of the three branches of government or how a case is decided in a court of law. But perhaps this is because courts are not a topic of everyday conversation.
And so the Supreme Court of Missouri created the Committee on Civic Education to help engage Missourians in a dialogue about their courts.
