Services for the Public
The Supreme Court library staff is available to assist the public in locating documents from specific citations to law-related materials. Neither the library staff – nor any member of the Supreme Court staff – is authorized to perform legal research in response to legal questions from the public. The library staff also cannot explain what a particular court opinion or statute means or how it might impact a particular case or situation, advise whether a party's conduct or actions violate the law, advise if or how to file pleadings in courts, or intervene with a judge or court on any party's behalf.
The Supreme Court Library offers for its patrons public computer terminals with free basic access to Fastcase, a comprehensive legal research service. The Fastcase collection includes cases, statutes, regulations, court rules and constitutions. Fastcase's libraries include primary law from all 50 states along with extensive federal coverage: the United States supreme court, all federal circuit courts of appeals, all federal district courts and all federal bankruptcy courts. Access is available in the library only, not from remote locations, and the library reserves the right to implement time limits for access to the public terminals and Fastcase to accommodate public demand for these services. More information is available in the library's computer use policy.
