16th circuit commission seeks applicants for Powell, Schieber circuit judge vacancies in Jackson County

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Sixteenth Circuit Judicial Commission is accepting applications for the positions of Circuit Judge, Division 11 and Circuit Judge, Division 15 of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit (Jackson County) starting May 1, 2017. The Division 11 position was created by the April 25, 2017, appointment of the Honorable Brent Powell to the Supreme Court of Missouri. The Division 15 position will be created by the upcoming retirement of Judge Robert M. Schieber effective June 1, 2017. 

Potential applicants should submit only one application for both positions. Only one set of interviews will be conducted for the two positions.

Citizens are encouraged to nominate well-qualified candidates for the commission’s consideration. The Missouri Constitution, article V, section 21, requires that a circuit judge be at least 30 years old, licensed to practice law in Missouri, a qualified voter of Missouri, and a resident of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. Nominations should be submitted to the contact person listed below.

The commission must receive all completed applications for these positions by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017.  

The commission will meet  June 19, 2017, in the courtroom of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District at 1300 Oak Street in Kansas City, Missouri, to conduct public interviews of the applicants for both positions and to select a panel of three nominees for the vacancy in Division 11. Thereafter, Governor Eric Greitens will have 60 days to appoint one of the three nominees as circuit judge in Division 11. After Governor Greitens makes that appointment, the commission will meet at a date to be announced to select a panel of three nominees for the vacancy in Division 15. Thereafter, Governor Greitens will have 60 days to appoint one of those three nominees for the vacancy in Division 15.

Members of the commission are Mark D. Pfeiffer, chief judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District; attorneys Teresa A. Woody and Michael A. Williams; and lay members William C. Gautreaux and Damon Daniel.
