A variety of sources call on the Missouri Judiciary to seek improvements in the administration of justice. Through appointments of citizens, public officials, lawyers and judges, various boards, commissions and committees are formed. These boards, commissions and committees advise the Supreme Court and others in carrying out the Court's administrative responsibilities in a variety of areas. Membership usually involves no compensation other than expenses and time away from the members' normal work assignments. Other commissions are independent commissions, established by the state constitution.

 

Among these are nonpartisan judicial commissions – each comprised of citizens, lawyers and a judge – to screen applicants for judicial vacancies under the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan and submit to the governor a panel of three qualified nominees. For vacancies on the Supreme Court of Missouri and Missouri Court of Appeals, the nonpartisan commission is called the Appellate Judicial Commission. The six circuit courts subject to the nonpartisan plan have their own circuit judicial commissions.

 

Another independent constitutional commission is the Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline – which handles complaints concerning alleged misconduct of judges and judicial commission members.
