16th circuit commission seeks applicants for two circuit judge vacancies in Jackson County

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Sixteenth Circuit Judicial Commission is accepting applications for the office of circuit judge of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit (Jackson County), to fill the vacancies created by the retirement of The Honorable W. Stephen Nixon in Division 5 and the retirement of The Honorable Jay A. Daugherty in Division 13.

Citizens are encouraged to nominate well-qualified candidates for the commission’s consideration. The Missouri Constitution, article V, section 21, requires that a circuit judge be at least 30 years old, licensed to practice law in Missouri, a citizen of the United States for at least 10 years, a qualified voter of Missouri for the three years preceding selection, and a resident of the 16th Judicial Circuit for at least one year. The application and instructions are also available at the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, 1300 Oak Street, Kansas City, Mo. The commission must receive all completed applications for these judicial vacancies by 4:30 p.m. February 25, 2011.

The commission will meet March 14 and 15, 2011, at the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, to interview applicants for both judicial vacancies. The interviews will be open to the public. The names of those to be interviewed and information relating to the number and characteristics of all applicants will be released publicly prior to the commission meeting March 14, 2011.

The commission will meet March 16, 2011, to select a panel of three nominees for the judicial vacancy in Division 5. Thereafter, Gov. Jay Nixon will have 60 days to appoint one of the three nominees to serve as the circuit judge in Division 5.

After the vacancy in Division 5 is filled, the commission will reconvene May 20, 2011, to select a panel of three nominees for the judicial vacancy in Division 13. The governor then will have 60 days to appoint one of the three nominees to serve as the circuit judge in Division 13.

Members of the commission are Lisa White Hardwick, chief judge, Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District; attorneys Scott S. Bethune and Tim E. Dollar; and lay members Byron G. Thompson and the Rev. Eric D. Williams.
