SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The 31st Circuit judicial commission is now accepting applications for the office of circuit judge position of the 31st Judicial Circuit (Greene County), created by the retirement of The Honorable J. Dan Conklin, Circuit Judge. Judge Conklin’s retirement date is July 10.
Citizens are encouraged to nominate well-qualified candidates for the commission's consideration. The Missouri Constitution, Article V, Section 21, requires that a circuit judge be not less than 30 years old, licensed to practice law in Missouri, a citizen of the United States for at least 10 years, a qualified voter of Missouri for the three years preceding selection, and a resident of the 31st Judicial Circuit for at least one year. The application and instructions also are available at the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, 300 Hammons Parkway, Suite 300, Springfield, Missouri. The commission must receive all completed applications for the circuit judge position vacancy by 5 p.m. May 26.
The commission will decide at a later date how many applicants will be interviewed. The commission will conduct public interviews on June 11 and/or June 12, if necessary, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each date. The commission then will select a panel of three nominees for the vacancy from the applicants who are interviewed. Thereafter, Governor Jay Nixon will have 60 days to appoint one of the three nominees as the new circuit judge.
Members of the commission are William W. Francis Jr, Chief Judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District; attorneys Steven B. Garner and Andrew K. Bennett; and lay members Steven Stepp and Joann Hosmer.
