Appeals court to hold formal swearing-in ceremony for Judge Lisa Van Amburg


Judge Lisa Van Amburg will be formally sworn in as Judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at the Old Post Office, En Banc Courtroom, 815 Olive St., St. Louis, Mo.

Van Amburg received her bachelor of arts degree in sociology in 1970 from Washington University and is a 1975 cum laude graduate of St. Louis University School of Law. She began her career as a law clerk at the Missouri Court of Appeals, clerking for Judge Theodore McMillian. In 1975, she co-founded and was partner at the firm Anderson, Everett, Sedey & Van Amburg. In 1981, she joined the firm Schuchat, Cook & Werner, where she became a partner and practiced for 12 years, and then she founded and was partner at Van Amburg, Chackes, Carlson & Spritzer. Prior to her appointment to the court of appeals, Van Amburg served as a judge for the circuit court of the city of St. Louis for nine years.

Over the years, Van Amburg has been active in her community, serving on various boards as well as in various bar organizations. She is a charter member of the St Louis Women Lawyer’s Association and has served on several committees of the Supreme Court of Missouri, including the trial judge education committee. She is an adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law.

Judge Richard B. Teitelman, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri and a former judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, will administer the oath of office. Eastern District Chief Judge Gary M. Gaertner Jr. will be presiding, and Judge Margaret M. Neill of the St. Louis circuit court will serve as master of ceremonies.
