Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District
Judges

Judges of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, are appointed in accordance with the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan. To be eligible to serve as a judge of the court, an individual must be licensed to practice law in Missouri, at least thirty years old, a resident of the district, a citizen of the United States for at least fifteen years, and a qualified voter of the state for nine years before selection. After appointment, judges of the court of appeals are subject to retention votes at times specified in the Missouri Constitution. If retained, a judge's term is twelve years. When deciding a case, the court can act en banc (i.e., all judges of the court participating) or in division (i.e., at least three but less than all judges participating). Most cases in the court of appeals are heard and decided in division. The judges of the southern district periodically elect a chief judge to attend to the administration of the court.
