Contrary to common belief, it is the Supreme Court of Missouri – not The Missouri Bar – that is in charge of the state's lawyer discipline system. To protect the public, the Supreme Court oversees a mechanism for investigation and, where necessary, discipline of lawyers who fail to meet their professional obligations.
The Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel was established by the Supreme Court to investigate ethical complaints against lawyers. It is funded through Missouri attorney enrollment fees. Complaints concerning alleged misconduct of judges and judicial commission members are handled by the Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline.
