Judge Powell employs two law clerks for two-year terms, running from August 1 to July 31. A new clerk is added each year to ensure he has one clerk with experience at all times. All law clerk positions are filled through July 31, 2027. The next law clerk opening is for the 2027-2029 term. Judge Powell will begin accepting applications in February 2026 for one clerkship beginning in August 2027. Law clerks are expected to take the Missouri bar examination. Judge Powell may employ summer interns or externs for special projects. The summer interns or externs are not compensated.
Judge Powell accepts law clerk applications from law students who have completed their first semester of their second year in law school. Applicants should submit a resume, law school transcript, writing sample and three letters of recommendation.
Preference will be given to applicants who are members of the law review or law journal; in the top 15 percent of their class; and who attended a law school in Missouri or who are native Missourians. Please submit your application by March 1 to ensure the most timely consideration.
Not all applicants are interviewed. Decisions as to which candidates are interviewed are dependent on the strength of the application materials — resume and writing sample.
For further information, please call Ms. Luebbert at (573) 751-1004.
