For more than a quarter-century, a multidisciplinary team has developed the policies governing the Missouri courts' use of technology. Codified in state law, the Missouri Court Automation Committee (MCA) includes members from all three branches of government and the legal community, supported by experts from the Supreme Court of Missouri’s state courts administrator’s office. MCA relies on subcommittees, task teams, and work groups to ensure the courts’ technology tools meet the specific needs of Missourians.

MCA has guided development of statewide case management and electronic filing systems and recently enabled remote public access to public case documents. Its next challenge is to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational efficiency, innovation, and customer experience within the Missouri Judiciary.

Advising MCA is a new work group bringing diverse perspectives to the process of developing AI strategies and policies while addressing critical issues like data privacy, security, bias mitigation, and transparency in AI algorithms and applications. This group’s mission is to establish policies upholding the highest standards of ethics and fairness and ensuring the courts’ AI initiatives align with our core values of transparency, accountability, and access to justice.

We believe AI can revolutionize our operations, significantly improving our processes, optimizing our resources, personalizing our customer interactions, and innovating the way we do business. We cannot achieve these goals, however, without the collective support and collaboration of all judges and court employees.
