ASTAR Fellows and Enrollees
Judges receive national certification as an Advanced Science and Technology Adjudication Resource – or ASTAR – fellow by completing 120 hours of coursework about complex science and technology issues such as genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, genetic engineering and forensics. The ASTAR consortium is made up of 39 jurisdictions from across the United States and more than 230 fellows.
ASTAR does not prescribe rulings, but prepares judges to preside over cases involving complex scientific issues and equips them to serve as gatekeepers of the admissibility of cutting-edge science and technology issues increasingly coming before Missouri’s courts. Fellows are expected to take case assignments related to complex science and technology issues, assist in training, and serve as resources for non-ASTAR judges.
