Rule 29 | Rules of Criminal Procedure | Misdemeanors or Felonies – Verdict, Sentence and New Trial

29.04 | Misdemeanors or Felonies – Punishment Exceeding Legal Limit

If a jury assesses a punishment above the limit prescribed by law for the offense of which defendant is convicted the court shall pronounce a sentence and render judgment within the statutory limits prescribed for the offense.

The source is prior Rule 27.06. There is a change in that the court is not required to assess the punishment at the limit allowed by law.
